On Saturday, June 15, 2024 the Fairfax community gathered to celebrate the Juneteenth National Independence Day! This nationwide celebration commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people near Galveston, Texas first learned they were free following the Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation.
This year Fairfax City hosted a free event in which local vendors participated and the community came together to tell this history and celebrate this important holiday. The Historical Society of Fairfax County was of course represented there by President Sue Kovach Shuman who tabled with Gene Shuman sharing information about the society’s programs and yearbook, as well as displayed the prints and notecards donated by artist Joan Zwack. We were also happy to be in community with City of Fairfax Mayor Catherine Read and of course Jenee Lindner, Linneall Taylor, and Rondia Prescott, authors of Black Communities of Fairfax: A History.
