At the society’s annual meeting on June 13, historian Mary Lipsey presented her research titled, “Breaking Down Barriers: An African American History Inventory.” Lipsey is one of the founding leaders of the Fairfax County African American History Inventory project, started by the Fairfax County History Commission in 2021. This project has yielded a list of documents, narratives, and other evidences of the experience of African Americans throughout Fairfax County’s history. It is a self-proclaimed “living document” that is added to and updated as research continues to be done.
